Ultrasound Examinations

Ultrasound as a diagnostic cornerstone

Ultrasound is one of veterinary medicine's most important imaging methods. It is painless, non-invasive, and does not expose the patient to radiation. The examination is usually performed on an awake patient — only a few require light sedation.

Abdominal ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasound examines the structure of internal organs and any changes: liver, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, bladder, stomach, intestines, pancreas, and lymph nodes. Common indications include vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, urination problems, suspected tumours, and general decline. Ultrasound-guided sampling allows biopsies to be taken directly from abnormal tissue.

Cardiac ultrasound

Cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography) is the primary examination method for heart disease. The examination assesses chamber size, wall thickness, valve function, and blood flow. It is essential for initiating and monitoring cardiac medication. Our clinic has official rights for breeding-related cardiac ultrasound examinations.

Pregnancy scanning

Ultrasound can confirm pregnancy from approximately day 24 of gestation. The examination assesses fetal viability and development. Radiography can more accurately estimate the number of puppies from day 50 of gestation.

Frequently asked questions about ultrasound

Is sedation needed for ultrasound? The majority of ultrasound examinations are performed on an awake patient without sedation. The examination is painless — the only preparation is shaving the examination area and applying ultrasound gel to the skin. Particularly restless or anxious patients may receive light sedation. How long does an ultrasound examination take? An abdominal ultrasound typically takes 20–40 minutes depending on findings and the scope of the examination. Cardiac ultrasound takes approximately 15–30 minutes. Pregnancy scanning is the quickest and usually takes 10–15 minutes. Results are communicated to the owner immediately after the examination.
